The history of Sour Diesel

Sour Diesel came out of 1990s New York, from Chemdog’s Chem 91 cut and a grower known as AJ, and Leafly calls it “the first East Coast strain to achieve prominence.” Its exact parents and date are still argued over.1,2,3,4

Timeline

  1. 1991Chemdog begins growing and spreading the line that becomes Chemdawg; its Chem 91 cut is the one tied to Sour Diesel.1,5
  2. 1992At a Phish show at New York’s Roseland Ballroom, Chemdog meets the grower Weasel, and a Chem 91 cutting goes to Staten Island.1
  3. Late 1994Per High Times, AJ, a New York acquaintance of Chemdog’s, gives the name “Diesel” to a chance cross: Chem 91 pollinated by an unknown hermaphrodite plant in Weasel’s grow room.1
  4. Mid-1990sLeafly dates Sour Diesel’s arrival to the mid-1990s, when its premium prices pushed growers back toward sativas.3
  5. Around 1996Barney’s Farm and SeedFinder date the cross to around 1996; Barney’s describes a Super Skunk pollinating a Chemdog 91 female.2,6
  6. Late 1990sWall Street buyers pay $800 to $1,000 an ounce, according to High Times, which says New York delivery services made their names supplying the “real” Sour Diesel after Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s crackdown on street weed spots.1

Why it spread

It was scarce, loud and expensive at a time when most growers favored indicas, which grow faster and yield more.2,3 Leafly credits Sour Diesel with bringing sativas back and with putting an East Coast strain in the spotlight for the first time.3 In New York it sold for about $50 for two grams and quickly won over the city’s connoisseurs and hip-hop stars, according to High Times.1

The early scene had a home base: Barney’s Farm says much of it revolved around Wetlands Preserve, a Tribeca nightclub open from 1989 to 2001, and Top Dawg Seeds told High Times it met AJ there.2,7 Cuts later spread from Staten Island and Manhattan to Long Island, Albany and the West Coast, picking up names like East Coast Sour Diesel along the way.2

The disputed parts of the story

  • Who made it: Weedmaps News and SeedFinder credit AJ as the breeder, High Times says he named it, and Leafly calls the original breeder unknown.1,4,6,16
  • What “Diesel” first meant: a new name for the Chem cut itself, according to Top Dawg Seeds and Barney’s Farm, or the name AJ gave the accidental cross, according to High Times.1,2,7
  • The second parent: Super Skunk, an unknown hermaphrodite or lines with Northern Lights in them (see genetics).1,17,18
  • When: Leafly says it became popular in the early 1990s; High Times dates the name to late 1994; Barney’s Farm and SeedFinder say around 1996.1,2,6,17
  • Where: most accounts say New York; DNA Genetics notes that some stories point to West Coast growers, while SeedFinder calls the California attribution a mistake.6,19
