Growing
Growing Sour Diesel: flowering time, yield and breeder specs
Seed versions of Sour Diesel flower in about 8–11 weeks indoors and finish outdoors between late September and early November in the Northern Hemisphere. Breeders describe a tall, stretchy plant, rate it moderate to moderately difficult, and disagree on how prone it is to mold.1,2,3,4,5

What the plant is like
Expect a tall, lanky plant: Leafly lists its height as tall, Weedmaps, citing online sources, says it grows tall indoors and outdoors, and DNA Genetics calls it tall and lanky.2,5,8 Humboldt Seed Organization says its Sour Diesel #2 stretches a lot and recommends a short vegetative period and a sea-of-green setup indoors; Reserva Privada suggests pinching and bending the tops to manage the stretch.4,7
Bud descriptions differ: SeedFinder describes airy, bright green buds with rust-colored pistils and less frost than modern strains, while AllBud describes dense, light green buds covered in orange hairs.9,10 The same online sources Weedmaps cites give a 42–56-day flowering period, shorter than any breeder figure above.8
What to watch for
Sources disagree on mold and feeding. DNA Genetics warns that the dense flowers can be prone to mold or mildew and advises keeping humidity below about 60% in flower, and SeedFinder’s description says growers find it sensitive to nutrients and susceptible to mildew; Humboldt Seed Organization calls its Sour Diesel #2 resistant to moisture and pests, and Reserva Privada says its version is not too nutrient sensitive.2,4,7,9
Yield is the other complaint: SeedFinder’s description says Sour Diesel is generally not a heavy producer, and that its fussiness and low yields have led many breeders to cross Diesel strains with hardier, higher-yielding varieties.9
Seeds and the law in the US
Under the amended federal definition of hemp, viable seeds from cannabis plants above 0.3% total THC, including THCA, are not hemp.11 Congress delayed that exclusion, with most of the new definition, from Nov 12 to Dec 11, 2026; only the exclusion of products with cannabinoids the plant cannot produce naturally starts on Nov 12.12 Home cultivation rules are set by each state.
